Tidal Trove Farming
Solving Connectivity Before Solving Software
A Custom App for an Offshore Fish Farm
A fish farm in Sual, Pangasinan wanted to move from local supplier to a reliable restaurant supply chain. The blocker wasn’t fish quality — it was data. Feed logs, net changes, fish weight, harvest timing: all on paper, hand-carried off floating cages, then re-typed into an email a day later. By the time management saw anything, it was already stale.
Here’s the technical wrinkle that made this harder than a typical app build: the cages sat well outside normal cell coverage. No signal, no app. So before we wrote a line of app code, we had to solve connectivity.
What we actually build
The process
A coast-to-cage relay
custom receiver hardware installed on the floating cage house that pulls a signal from shore and rebroadcasts it as local WiFi, giving caretakers real internet access on open water for the first time.
One React Native app, three platforms
iPhone, Android, and web from a single codebase, so caretakers and office staff work off the same live data instead of fragmented versions.
Self-hosted infrastructure
local servers with Cloudflare layered on top for security and uptime, so the client owns their data instead of renting it from a big cloud provider.
Sync logic built for bad connections, not perfect ones
dropped signals and overlapping updates are normal out on the water, so we hardened the sync to recover gracefully instead of corrupting data or losing entries.
The result
Data flow
Six data points now flow live from cage to office: feed, weight, net status, harvest scheduling, market pricing, and reserved order volume.
The result: a full day of lag, gone. No more paper, no more re-typing, no more guessing which net was on which cage last week — just one shared, real-time view of the farm. Which is exactly what you need when you’re trying to convince restaurants you can supply them consistently, week after week.
